BRIEF HISTORYThe forebears of the Asaf Jahi dynasty came to India from Samarkhand, in Central Asia, but the family actually originated from Baghdad. In 1724, the Moghul Governor of the Deccan, Asaf Jah, Nizam ul-Mulk, Qamar ud-din Khan, established himself as an independant ruler. Hyderabad brecame the capital and later lent its name to that of the state he created. The first Nizam's successors became closly allied to the British, frequently assisting them in subduing their enemies, the Mahrathas, Tipu Sultan of Mysore, and the French. In later years, the Nizam's troops invariably took part in all the main campaigns undertaken by the Indian army. Large numbers of troops took part in the First and Second World Wars. These contributions earned for the Nizam unequalled titles and honours from a grateful Emperor. The state was the largest and premier princely state in the Empire. The Nizam ruled over a cosmopolitan population of over 16 million people, and over lands extending to 82,698 sq.miles of homogenous terrritory. These advantages persuaded the Nizam to attempt an independent existence, when the British withdrew from the sub-continent in 1947. He refused to join either India or Pakistan, preferring to form a separate kingdom within the British Commonwealth of nations. Unfortunately, the majority of his subjects were Hindus and his territory was surrounded on all sides by Indian territory. Attempts by certain groups of Muslim fundamentalists to ferment trouble and seize power, prompted the new Indian government to invade and annex Hyderabad by a, so-called, police action in 1948. Although the Nizam then acceded to the Dominion of India, power simply slipped from his grasp. He received the ceremonial post of Rajpramukh in 1950, but resigned from this office when the states were re-organised in 1956. Hyderabad was then split and dismembered along linguistic lines. The state that was once so well noted for its religious and ethnic toleration, ruled by a highly cultured and intellectually brilliant elite who maintained all that was best in the old Mughal order, was now no more. Style of address of His Exalted Highness The Nizam: Great and Holy Protector of the World, Shadow of God, Mighty Holder of Destinies, Full of Light and Most Elevated Among Creatures, The Exalted, May God's Shadow Never Grow Less, May God Protect Your Kingdom and Your Sultanate.The principal consort of the ruling prince: Nawab (personal name) Begum Sahiba, with the style of Her Highness.The Heir Apparent: Walashan Nawab (personal title), Sahibzada Mir (personal name) Khan Bahadur, The Prince of Berar, with the style of His Highness.The wife of the Heir Apparent: (personal name) Begum Sahiba, The Princess of Berar, with the style of Her Highness.The younger sons of the ruling prince: Walashan Nawab (personal title), Sahibzada Mir (personal name) Khan Bahadur.The daughters of the ruling prince: Sahibzadi (personal name) Begum Sahiba.NOBILITY:The state of Hyderabad broadly followed the old Mughal forms. Status was usually depended upon the size of the mensab held by the individual. These were originally military commands with estates or revenues attached to enable payment of the troops forming the commands. In Hyderabad, these were later converted into state pensions or assignments of revenue, without actual military commands being attached to them. The hierarchy of titles also followed Mughal forms and were generally additive, i.e. each ascending rank was added to existing titles rather than replacing them. These titles, in ascending order, were as follows: Muslims:-Khan Khan BahadurNawabJangDaula MulkUmaraJahThe formal style of rendering the titles for a Muslim of the highest rank was as follows - (personal title) Jah, (personal title) ul-Umara, (personal title) ul-Mulk, (personal title) ud-Daula, Nawab (personal name) Khan Bahadur, (personal title) Jang. However, in normal parlance, the style of address would be Nawab (personal title) Jah Bahadur, Nawab (personal title) ud-Daula, or Nawab (personal title) Jang Bahadur. the great Muslim nobles of Hyderabad, the foremost family were known as the Amir-i-Paigah family. They took the name from the principal office held by the head of the house, command of the personal household troops of the Nizam. They are Sayyidis descended from the famous sufi saint, Shaikh Farid ud-din Shakarganj. At one time the family domains comprised a fifth of the entire territory of the state. The wealth and status of the family, together with the close marriage alliances with the Nizam's family, ensured near Royal status for its senior members. ruled by a Muslim family and its Muslim retainers, the population of the state was overwhelmingly composed of Hindus. Many state officials and nobles were drawn from the Hindu community and enjoyed titles of parallel rank to their Muslim counterparts.  ORDERS & DECORATIONS:Hilal-i-Osmania (the Osmani Crescent): founded by Nizam Osman Ali Khan on 11^th December 1944, as a reward for exceptional acts of self sacrifice and courage in the public interest, without regard to position, occupation or gender. Awarded in a single class.Tamgha-i-Khusrow-i-Deccan (the Khusrow-i-Deccan Medal): founded by Nizam Osman Ali Khan on 11^th December 1944, to reward and recognise important and useful services in the public interest, without regard to position, occupation or gender. Awarded in three classes (1. Gold - limited to two recipients at any one time, 2. Silver - limited to three recipients, and 3. Bronze - limited to ten recipients). Tamgha-i-Asafia (the Asafia Medal): founded by Nizam Osman Ali Khan on 11^th December 1944, to reward distinguished of a civil nature, without regard to position, occupation or gender. Awarded in three classes (1. Gold - limited to three recipients at any one time, 2. Silver - limited to six recipients, and 3. Bronze - limited to ten recipients).VASSALS:Large tracts of territory within the state were composed of ancient Hindu fiefdoms known as samasthans, some of them dating back to independent principalities founded after the fall of the Warangal kingdom in mediaeval times. The ranks and titles of these families were on a par with the great Muslim magnates of the state. Many of them enjoyed high military commands, equivalent to the mensabs. Shaikh Mir Ismail [Alam Shaikh Siddiqi], Alam ul-Ulema, son of Shaikh Allahdad, son of 'Abdu'r Rahman Shaikh Azizan, fourteenth in direct male descent from Shaikh Shihab ud-din Suhrawardy, of Suhrawada, in Kurdistan, a celebrated Sufi mystic who lived in Persia, and lineal descendant of the father-in-law of the prophet, Abu Bakar Sadiq. m. (first) a lady of the family of Mir Hamadan, a distinguished Sayyid of Sarmarkand. He was k. at Golkonda, 1686, having had issue, two sons and a daughter:1) Nawab Qilich Khan Bahadur [Khwaja 'Abid]. b. at Liabad, near Samarkand (s/o the first wife). Qazi and Shaikh ul-Islam of Bokhara. Migrated to India and entered the Mughal service in 1641. Granted the titles of Khan 1687, prom toKhan Bahadur 1706, and Mu'iz ud-Daula and Salabat Jang in 1721. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 3,000 zat and 3,000 sowar 1687, prom to 5000 zat and 5,000 sowar 1706. He d. at Gulbarga, 1728 (bur. Shah Banda Nawaz), having had issue, three sons:

i) Nawab Mir Khairu'llah Khan Bahadur, Fathyab Jang. He had issue, a son:

(1) Fathyab ud-Daula, Nawab Khwaja Marhamat Khan Bahadur, Fathyab Jang. m. Sahibzadi Fakhr un-nisa Begum Sahiba [Manjli Begum], second daughter of H.H. Asaf Jah II, Nizam ul-Mulk, Nizam ud-Daula, Nawab Mir Nizam 'Ali Khan Bahadur, Fath Jang, Sipah Salar, Nizam of Hyderabad. He had issue, a daughter:

(a) Sahibzadi … Begum. b. 30^th July 1781 (d/o Fakhr un-nisa Begum).

ii) Sahibzada Mir Hafizu'llah Khan. 

iii) Nawab Mir Marhamat Khan, Zafaryab Jang. He had issue, several sons.

c) Nasir ud-Daula, Nawab 'Abdu'l Rahim Chin Qilich Khan Bahadur, Salabat Jang. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 1,500 zat and 1,500sowar 1701, prom to 5,000 zat and 5,000 sowar 1721, prom. to 7,000 zat and 7,000 sowar 1724. Faujdar of Jaunpur 1717-1722, of Burhanpur 1722-1725, 1735 and 1743, of Aurangabad 1725-1743. Granted the titles of Chin Qilich Khan Bahadur by Emperor Bahadur Shah, and prom. toNasir ud-Daula and Salabat Jang 1721. He d. before 15^th February 1744, having had issue, a son:

i) Sahibzada Mir Mujahid Khan. He became a dervish and his end is unknown.

d) A son who d. early in life.

a) Khadija Begum Sahiba. m. 'Azd ud-Daula, Nawab Muhammad 'Iwaz Khan Bahadur, Qaswara Jang [Khwaja Kamal] (d. 11^th July 1730, bur. Shrine of Shaikh Burhan ud-din Gharib), sometime Nazim of Ilichpur, son of Mir 'Iwaz Haidari, by his wife, a sister of Sayyid Niyaz Khan. She had issue - see below.

b) A daughter. m. Zahir ud-Daula, Nawab Ri'ayat Khan Bahadur (d. from wounds recived at the battle of Shakar Khera, 2^nd October 1724), sometime Subadar of Malwa, younger son of Khwaja Baha ud-din Khan. She had issue, a son - see below.

2) Khwaja Baha ud-din Khan. He was k. on the orders of the ruler of Bokhara, before 1681, having had issue: 

a) H.H. Wazir ul-Mamalik-i-Hindustan, Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Mir Muhammad Amin Khan Chin Bahadur, Nusrat Jang. Migrated to India and entered the Mughal service in 1689, rising to the rank of 2,000 zat and 1,000 sowar 1689, prom to 1,200 sowar in 1700, prom to 3,500 zat in 1706, prom to 4,000 zat in 1707, prom to 1,500 sowar in 1709, prom. to 6,000 zat and 6,000 sowar 1713, prom to 8,000 zat and 8,000 sowar 9/10/1720.Sadar-i-Qul 1699-1707, Faujdar of Moradabad 1707-1713, 2^nd Bakshi 1713-1720 and Subadar of Malwa 1718-1719. Vicegerent of the Empire with the title of from Wazir ul-Mamalik 25^th November 1720. Granted the titles Khan 1689, Khan Bahadur 1700, Chin Bahadur 1709, I'timad ud-Daula and Nusrat Jang 1713. m. (first) a daughter of Khwaja Zachariah. m. (second) Nawab Zinat Mihr Begum, a relative of Dilrus Banu Begum Sahiba alias Rabia Daurani. He d. suddenly, at Delhi, 8^th February 1721 (bur. there at the Madrassa near the Ajmeri Gate), having had issue:

i) H.H. Wazir ul-Mamalik-i-Hindustan, Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Qamar ud-din Khan Bahadur, Nusrat Jang [Mir Muhammad Fazil]. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 6,000 zat and 6,000 sowar 9/10/1720, prom. to 7,000 zat and 7,000sowar 9/10/1720, prom to 8,000 zat and 8,000 sowar 22/7/1724. Cdt of the Corps of Gentlemen (Bakshi-i-Ahdiyan) 1713-1719, 2^nd Bakshi1720-1724, Wazir ul-Mamalik 22^nd July 1724-1748. Granted the titles of Qamar ud-din Khan Bahadur by Emperor Aurangzeb, and prom. to I'timad ud-Daula 30^th January 1721. m. Sholapuri Bai, sister of Nawab Jan-nisar Khan, sometime Faujdar of Kora Jahanabad. He was accidentally k. by a cannon ball while praying in his tent, at Manupur, 21^st March 1748, having had issue, six sons and four daughters:

(1) The eldest son of H.H. Wazir ul-Mamalik-i-Hindustan, Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Qamar ud-din Khan Bahadur, Nusrat Jang [Mir Muhammad Fazil]. m. after 1741, a daughter of Nawab 'Ali Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Katehir (Rohilkand).

(2) Mu'in ul-Mulk, Nawab Farzand Khan Bahadur, Rustam-i-Hind [Mir Mannu]. Commanded the Mughal army which defeated Ahmad Shah Abdali at Manupur, 21^st March 1748. Subadar of Lahore and Multan 21^st April 1748-1753. Granted the title ofFarzand Khan Bahadur Rustam-i-Hind' by Ahmad Shah Abdali 1748. m. Murad Begum Sahiba [Mughlani Begum] (d. in Jammu, after 1779), Administrator of Lahore for her infant son January-April 1754 and 1754-1756, née Soraya Begum, daughter of Jani Khan, by his wife, Durdana Begum, daughter of Saif ud-Daula, Nawab 'Abdu's Samad Khan Bahadur, Diler Jang, sometime Subadar of Lahore and Kashmir. He d. (poisoned?) at Lahore, 3^rd November 1753 (bur. there at Shahidganj), having had issue, one son and two daughters:

(a) Mu'in ul-Mulk, Nawab Muhammad Amin Khan Bahadur. b. 1751 (s/o Mughlani Begum), educ. privately. Naib Subadar of Lahore 12^th November (aged 2 years, the Subadar of Lahore, his superior, being aged 3 years). Invested asSubadar for the Shah of Afghanistan, together with the title of Mu'in ul-Mulk, January 1754. He d. at Lahore, May 1754.

(a) Umda Begum Sahiba (d/o Mughlani Begum). m. at Delhi, 21^st February 1757, as his second wife, Asaf Jah, Amir ul-Umara, Nizam ul-Mulk, Nawab Mir Ghazi ud-din III Khan Bahadur, Firuz Jang [Mir Shihab ud-din] (b. at Nawar, 1^stFebruary 1736; d. at Kalpi, 1^st December 1800), eldest son of Amir ul-Umara, Nizam ul-Mulk, Nawab Mir Ghazi ud-din II Khan Bahadur, Firuz Jang, by his wife, Nawab Sultan Begum Sahiba, youngest daughter of H.H. Wazir ul-Mamalik-i-Hindustan, Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Qamar ud-din Khan Bahadur, Nusrat Jang [Mir Muhammad Fazil] - see below.

(b) … Begum Sahiba (d/o Mughlani Begum).

(3) H.H. Granted the title of Zahir ud-Daula by the Nizam in 1721. m. a daughter of Khwaja 'Abid Qilich Khan Bahadur. He d. from wounds recived at the battle of Shakar Khera, 2^nd October 1724, having had issue, a son:

i) Zahir ud-Daula, Nawab 'Azimu'llah Khan Bahadur. Naib Subadar of Malwa 1723-1725. m. a daughter of H.H. Wazir ul-Mamalik-i-Hindustan, Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Qamar ud-din Khan Bahadur, Nusrat Jang [Mir Muhammad Fazil].

a) Sayyid Niyaz Khan. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 1,500 zat and 500 sowar, Naib Subadar of Bijapur 1705-1707. He had issue, a son:

i) Sayyid Niyaz Khan II. m. a daughter of Itimad ud-Daula, Nawab Mir Muhammad Fazil Qamar ud-din Khan Bahadur, Nusrat Jang, sometime Wazir ul-Mammalik. He was k. on the orders of Nadir Shah of Persia. C

i) 'Azd ud-Daula, Nawab Muhammad 'Iwaz Khan Bahadur, Qaswara Jang [Khwaja Kamal]. b. at Turan. Migrated to India and entered the service of Firuz Jang as Master of the Household, Nazim of Ilchipur, Subadar of Berar 1713, prom to the rank of 7,000 zat and 7,000sowar, Naib Subadar, Diwan and Bakshi to Asaf Jah I. Granted the title of 'Iwaz Khan by Emperor Alamgir 1702. m. Khadija Begum Sahiba, daughter of Khwaja 'Abid Qilich Khan Bahadur. He d. at Aurangabad, 11^th July 1730 (bur. Shrine of Shaikh Burhan ud-din Gharib), having had issue, including five sons and a daughter:

(1) Nawab Sayyid Jamal Khan Bahadur, Qiswara Jang. Appointed to a mansab of 5,000 zat and 5,o00 sowar, Naib Subadar of Berar, later Governor of Berar. He d. before 13^th January 1747, having had issue.

(2) 'Azd ud-Daula, Nawab Momin Khan Bahadur, Qaswara Jang. Naib Subadar of Hyderabad under Asaf Jah I, Governor of Burhanpur, and of Nandair. Granted the jagir of Patar Shaikh Babu in Sarkar Narnalah, Berar. He d. 15^th November 1770, having had issue.

He refused to sign any instrument of accession to the Dominion of India or Pakistan, when those states came into being in August 1947. His domains were subsequently invaded by Indian troops in a so-called “police-action” on 13^th September 1948 and an Indian administration established throughout the state on 19^th September 1948. The Nizam issued afirman on 23^rd November 1949, in which he announced that Hyderabad would also be governed by the forthcoming new constitution, then being considered by the Constituent Assembly in Delhi, and effective from 26^th January 1950*. The High Court of India held that he ceased being a sovereign as of that date.
